The Marine Corps continues to reach out to individuals who lived or worked on Camp Lejeune in 1987 or before. To date, the Corps has successfully registered more than 150,000 individuals through its call center and Web site.
Reaching Out
The registrant increase comes from extensive efforts by the Marine Corps to locate individuals beginning in September 2007. The Marine Corps collaborated with the Defense Manpower Data Center and Internal Revenue Service to have notification letters forwarded on its behalf. To further reach potential registrants, the Marine Corps continues to work with local and regional media, veterans facilities and military associations. The project maintains an official Web site and a fully staffed, toll-free call center that has received more than 50,000 calls.
Background
In the early 1980s, trichloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE), benzene and other unregulated volatile organic compounds were found in water systems serving the Tarawa Terrace and Hadnot Point housing areas. When it was determined that specific groundwater wells were impacted, they were taken out of service in 1984 and 1985.
Funding Research Initiatives
The Department of the Navy is collaborating with a public health agency, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, to project when the drinking water was first impacted, who may have consumed the impacted water and whether there is any association between exposure to the chemicals in the drinking water and certain adverse health conditions. The National Academies’ National Research Council released a comprehensive review of evidence regarding potential associations between exposure to contaminated drinking water and adverse health effects. Individuals who register with the official Camp Lejeune Historic Drinking Water Registry receive the public summary of the NRC committee’s report. The Marine Corps will continue to notify registrants of new research results as they become available.
Register Today
The Marine Corps remains committed to reaching individuals who lived or worked on Camp Lejeune to build a comprehensive registry to notify individuals of results from the research initiatives. If you or anyone you know lived or were stationed on Camp Lejeune in 1987 or before, please visit www.marines.mil/clwater or call (877) 261-9782.
Compliments of NAPS.
I am big on the military, esp. with the Marine Corp. I saw this syndicated information and figured I would help spread the word about this information. SEMPER FI

It is that time of year again, garage sales and yard sales, etc. So why not share some tips and tricks to have a successful one?
Garage sales (yard sales) will soon appear in neighborhoods throughout the U.S. and Canada. These sales are a great way to clean out clutter while making some additional money. “Garage sales are just another form of retailing. Why not use the thinking retailers use to get the most of your garage sale?” asks John Schulz, the academic director for the advertising, fashion and retail management, and design management programs at The Art Institutes International Minnesota.
Approaching the garage sale with a little innovation and creativity will help maximize sales. advertising department chair of Miami International University of Art and Design, Judith Anderson offers some ideas that can generate buzz: “The same theory Mr. Schulz uses applies – it is imperative to use the same thinking advertisers and event planners use to maximize the opportunities in a garage sale.”
These opportunities include a mix of tried-and-true tactics blended with newer retail innovations. “Retail establishments use customer loyalty programs to increase return business,” says Tammy Tavassoli, fashion department faculty member at The Illinois Institute of Art – Schaumburg. “Applying some of these tactics can increase not only your current garage sales, but future sales as well.”
Schulz, Anderson and Tavassoli offer these suggestions to make the most of your garage sale:
Scheduling/location/traffic: When scheduling your sale, think about high traffic times like community events or neighborhood garage sales.
Customer convenience/loyalty: Many shoppers will arrive with children, so offer a designated play area to help keep them occupied while parents shop. Also, offer refreshments like lemonade and cookies. Place a welcome book at the refreshments table. After the sale, send visitors a thank-you note and notify them of your future sales.
Pricing/merchandise: Since garage sales rarely have a “cost” associated with merchandise, any income is pure profit. You want to price your wares fairly, and consider combining large tables or areas to group like-priced goods – and post the retail on a large sign. This saves time and eases set up. For those who include their contact information in the previously mentioned notebook, you may want to offer a small discount.
I personally have set a lot of my items at very low prices and they went very fast. (Steve Patterson, owner of this blog quotes)
advertising/marketing: A garage sale should be thought of as an event that requires planning and promotion using advertising strategies to ensure its success. For example, choosing a theme related to the merchandise and carrying it throughout the chosen advertising including the day of the event can be very effective.
I also place advertisements in some area newspapers. That seems to help. Another great place to place your yard sale is Craigs List. I have also designed a flier that can be used to place on bulletin boards. (Steve Patterson, owner of this blog adds)
Some other ideas include:
- Creating an advertising campaign employing traditional media-standbys such as neighborhood signs and fliers (placed in city hall, local business bulletin boards, laundry mats, PTA and school/church bulletin boards) and local directory and newspaper listings.
- Continuing the advertising campaign with new media by creating a social networking fan page and creating an event for the garage sale inviting friends and family.
- Using your Facebook and Twitter updates to inform your networks of the event at least four times (2 weeks prior, 1 week prior, 2 days prior, and the day of the event).
- Other social networks MySpace, Linked-In, Etc. (The list could go on and on).
- The day of the sale use Facebook and Twitter to offer discounts to customers or promote additional incentives for referring fans or customers.
Successful garage sales require creative planning. Borrowing effective strategies from the merchandising and advertising industries can ensure success. It is important to remember all the tools and resources available, and to minimize wasted time and resources while maximizing your profit margin. Steve Patterson wants you to please feel free to share with me as a comment your yard sale tips you have.

While listening to The Huckabee Report, May 29, 2009 at 8:30 a.m. on WIVK, I heard that Knoxville, TN has made it to his broadcast. Some guy here in Knoxville, TN has 21 kids. Yes, you read that right. 21 KIDS! He has these 21 kids by 11 different women. Get this! Huckabee adds this young man only makes minimum wage. I think some neutering is order for young me and women that keep popping out kids like that! Don’t you agree? OH yea, this young man got Huckabee’s big “ZERO”.
On a side note, he also talked about the American Flag and how places say it is offensive to display the American Flag! I find nothing wrong with displaying the American Flag. We ought to be proud to be Americans and show it! It was also like this Marine Veteran that has 3 United States Marine Corp emblems on his truck. His home owners association fines $50 per night your car is parked at your own with any kind of decal on it.

I just wanted to say that Mike Huckabee has been doing a great job with this radio show The Huckabee Report.
It took just a little bit of of getting accustom to Mike Huckabee, being use to Paul Harvey. Paul Harvey will truly be missed. I really enjoyed listening to Paul Harvey News and Comment. We will no longer hear, “And That Was The Rest of the Story” as Paul Harvey signed off from his broadcast.
I love how Huckabee adds his own comments or gestures to the news he presents it over the air. Keep up the great work Mike!
I listen to The Huckabee Report on WIVK 107.7 FM in Knoxville, TN.

So have you ever meet anyone famous?
I have met a few famous people.
I got to meet Kenny Chesney in the mid 90′s.
It was part of the opening of a store that I worked.
I got his CD autographed and a poster autographed too.
I even got to shake his hand and talk to him for a few minutes.
Another person I got to meet was John Duncan Jr.
I met him while I was in middle school at a pancake breakfast a few times.
He was going to come to my Eagle Scout ceremony, but had to send someone as his representative,
since he had official business to take care of. I was presented with an United States of America flag
that was flown over the Capital.
I have got to meet a few others while working at a local newspaper, early on in the 2000′s.
I got to meet a few from Stars in the Smokies in Newport, TN and some at the Foothills Fall Festival in Maryville, TN.
I have even got to meet some local news casters and radio DJ’s.
Who famous have you met? Feel free to leave your comments and let me know!
