3rd Annual Bikers for Scouts

I was out the other day with my girlfriend, Sandy, and I noticed a flier that said
Bikers for Scouts. I wasn’t too sure what it was. I did some Googling and didn’t find much information on it. I found a few places that had some information on it. This will be the 3rd annual Bikers for Scouts.

Bikers for Scouts is a Bike ride benefit to help the Boy Scouts of America in the Great Smoky Mountain Council. It is to help make restorations to Camp Pellissippi.

Camp Pellissippi is a Boy Scout camp located on Norris Lake in Union County area. It was built in the 1940′s.

I remember as a young scout my troop would always go to that camp for the weekend and often for a week. We would help do some community service, trail clearing and other stuff like that.

Scouting was a big part of my life and I highly recommend Scouting to anyone. Plus, I am an Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America.

The fundraiser will be held at Tommy’s Motorsports just off Exit 122 on I-75 in Clinton, TN (2401 Andersonville Highway). There will be a 62 mile bike ride.

This event is May 22, 2010 and registration begins at 10 a.m. and the ride starts at noon. It cost $20 per bike with a lunch provided. Door prizes, silent auction and a t-shirt are also available for this wonderful event.

Want to know more information please feel free to contact the Great Smoky Mountain Boy Scout office at (865) 588-6514 or visit www.bsa-gsmc.org.

Oral Presentation Day

Filed Under Cherokees, DSS-0800, School, Scouting

I found an old journal entry I had written from a college class I had. This entry is from March 12, 1996. It was titled Oral Presentation Day. I have some more entries that I plan to share in my blog as well. So please come back or subscribe to my blog to keep updated on these entries.
Here is that journal entry:

Today, I done my oral presentation and I thought I wasn’t ready for it and thought I did not have enough material for my oral presentation. When I started mine, I was a little nervous. Once, I got into it and found out that I had the attention of the others and their interest then my nervousness lessened and I wasn’t so nervous anymore. I also liked the questioning part I had, it gave me and the others a chance to learn something new. I did my oral presentation on ‘The Cherokee Indians’. I personally and so does the Native Americans don’t like to be called Indians. I learned a some information while researching the Cherokees.

I think my audience liked the crafts I showed as my visual aide. I wanted to get my oral presentation over with, that way I would not procrastinate on it and I could get it over and done with. I like talking in front of people it is a little nervous often. But, I am an open person, maybe that’s why I like talking to people.

I learned from my oral presentation that the Cherokees just celebrated their 150th birthday anniversary in 1989.

I also learned that is is not Cherokee they speak, it is Iroquoian. I was also very pleased to find the information I gathered on the world wide web, plus I had some copied information I have attained from Scouts. My speech, I feel I could have done better, but I believe I did an excellent job. I would just have to wait till I get my grade back on my oral presentation. If I was feeling better, I might have done a little better job on it, I personal believe.

Footnotes:

1. No, I don’t recall that grade I got on that oral presentation.

Setting Goals and Solving Problems

Filed Under DSS-0800, Goals, Graduation, School, Scouting, Tips

I found an old journal entry I had written from a college class I had. This entry is from January 30, 1996. It was titled Setting Goals and Solving Problems. I have some more entries that I plan to share in my blog as well. So please come back or subscribe to my blog to keep updated on these entries.
Here is that journal entry:

Goal setting is important because it will allow you to try something new and gives you something new and gives you an opportunity to get something done in a certain amount of time. First, set a small goal or short-term goal. This goal may later lead to a long-term goal. I personally found out that if you set goals you will do better in life and won’t procrastinate a lot on several assignments and/or projects. If you set goals you will usually try to do anything to accomplish that goal in as little time as possible.

With any goal you set make sure it is measurable, reachable, believable, realistic, flexible and controllable.

I have reached three of my biggest goals. The first one is, I attained the God and Country, “Protestant” Award. This goal took me one year to accomplish. Secondly, I attained the Rank of Eagle in the Boy Scouts of America. This goal took me four years of Cub Scouts and eight years of Boy Scouts of American, which equals a total of twelve years of Scouting to accomplish.

My next goal is to graduate with an Associates degree in two years from now. I could list some short term goals, but they will go on forever and a day. I also believe some people set goals everyday, in fact they don’t realize they are setting goals.

Footnotes:

1. I attained my God and Country Award before I attained the Rank of Eagle. Usually it is more common to attain the Rank of Eagle, then work on the God and Country awards.

2. I actually graduated with my Associated degree 4 years, 2 years longer than what I predicted back then.

3. I did edit this journal entry some and removed some text and added some text as well.

4. This came about from Chapter 2 in my class and it was my 2nd journal entry.

It is hard to believe the the Boy Scouts of America just celebrated it’s 100th Anniversary on February 8, 2010. I am an Eagle Scout. I attained the highest honor in 1994. I even remember being in the Boy Scouts as they celebrated the 75th Diamond Jubilee. I started out in the Cub Scouts as a Bobcat and went all the way through to Boy Scouts to the highest rank you can earn, Eagle. ONCE AN EAGLE, ALWAYS AN EAGLE! I have have got to help a few Boy Scouts troops as an Assistant Scoutmaster. Scouting has done a lot for me and I am very proud to be part of the Scouting Community. Here’s to many more years of Scout. Thank you Lord Baden Powell. Boy Scouts of America 1910-2010.

Red Oak vs. White Oak

Do you know the difference between a Red Oak and a White Oak?

Red Oak Leaf

Red Oak Leaf

RED OAK has pointed corners. Just think Red Man used arrows.

White Oak Leaf

White Oak Leaf

WHITE OAK has rouneded corners. White man used bullets.

This was something I remembered while in Scouting. It came back to my attention going camping a few weeks ago and then noticed a White Oak Tree while walking the trail in Norris by the dam. So I figured I would share with you in a post in my blog.

What is my greatest accomplishment

I would have to say that my greatest accomplishment is attaining the rank of Eagle.

The rank of Eagle is the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America. I attained the rank of Eagle on July 5, 1994. I was a member of Troop 26 in the Great Smoky Mountain Council. I started out as a Cub Scout and worked my way to the very top! I am also a Life Time member of the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA).

Once an Eagle Scout, Always an Eagle Scout!

Reader input! What is your greatest accomplishment?

Meeting famous people

Filed Under Media & News, Scouting, famous people

So have you ever meet anyone famous?
I have met a few famous people.
I got to meet Kenny Chesney in the mid 90′s.
It was part of the opening of a store that I worked.
I got his CD autographed and a poster autographed too.
I even got to shake his hand and talk to him for a few minutes.

Another person I got to meet was John Duncan Jr.
I met him while I was in middle school at a pancake breakfast a few times.
He was going to come to my Eagle Scout ceremony, but had to send someone as his representative,
since he had official business to take care of. I was presented with an United States of America flag
that was flown over the Capital.

I have got to meet a few others while working at a local newspaper, early on in the 2000′s.
I got to meet a few from Stars in the Smokies in Newport, TN and some at the Foothills Fall Festival in Maryville, TN.

I have even got to meet some local news casters and radio DJ’s.

Who famous have you met? Feel free to leave your comments and let me know!

A Double Scouting Holiday

Today, February 8, 2009, is a double Scouting Holiday. Not only is it Scouting Sunday but it is also The Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of American. In one year the Boy Scouts will celebrate their 100th Anniversary. So that means this year is the 99th. 1910 – 2009.

So some of my readers will know, I am an Eagle Scout. I attained my rank of Eagle in 1994. An Eagle Scout is the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America. “Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle!”.

I am also a lifetime member of National Eagle Scouts Association (NESA).

BTW, I have noticed that the Scouts are also collecting food for Scouting for Food. So if you can donate food, that will be great. The food will go to those in need.

Greatest Accomplishment

My greatest Accomplishment is…
Attaining the Rank of Eagle

The Rank of Eagle, for those that don’t know if the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America. I attained my Eagle July 5, 1994. I had to advance in rank to move on my Trail to Eagle. I also had to earn “Skill Awards.” They no longer have Skill Awards. Plus, I earned Merit Badges. I had to go on camping trips, do community service projects and serve as leadership position in my Troop.

For my Eagle Scout project, I did some landscaping. I landscaped around the Annex building of my old church. The building wasn’t used for anything. They called it the Old Youth Building. Shortly, after I landscaped the building, they turned it into a Mother’s Day Out building.

I started out in Cub Scouts as a Bobcat. I don’t think they had Tiger Scouts then or near me. I have also served as Assistant Scoutmaster for 2 troops in Knoxville, TN and then 1 in Gaylord, MI.
I would like to find a local troop and help them. I have two numbers to contact about helping a local troop.

My old troop is no longer around, but I have heard they are trying to get the church to approve having the troop back again, this would be a few blocks from my house. Growing up it was just half a block away.

In the Scouts I got up to “Brotherhood” in the Order of the Arrow. (0A). Those in the BSA know what I am talking about.

I need to renew my membership to NESA (National Eagle Scout Association).

My resume even list that my greatest achievement is attaining my Rank of Eagle.

BTW, did you know that in Feb. 2010, Boy Scouts will be 100 years old?
I remember the 75th Diamond Anniversary while I was a kid in the Scouts (1985).
My Boy Scout troop even made it to the 50th Anniversary, forgot when now.

“Once an Eagle Scout, Always an Eagle Scout.”
