Filed Under Photography, Web site, graphic design

As most of you all know I am a graphic designer. I have been doing graphic design work since I was in high school. Well, I now have my portfolio Online. I am still in the middle of uploading my design pieces, but feel free to take some time and go visit it for me. Check out Steve Patterson’s Online Portfolio at http://portfolio.cardeologist.com.

I am either planning on adding my photography work on my portfolio page or make me another page that is just my photography.

Smart small business tips for success

Filed Under Business Card Tips, Business Cards, Facebook, Tips, Twitter, Web site, graphic design

Creativity is the key to keeping a small business flourishing in tight economic times. And while creativity will make your business grow stronger, there are also other free tools and opportunities small businesses should use to their advantage.

Many resources are available for small business owners to develop a plan for success, says “Mr. AllBiz” Steve Strauss, author of “The Small Business Bible.” He shares some of his tips here:

Make your small business appear big.
You might not have a huge warehouse or more than a dozen employees, but you can still give your business the professional appearance of one 10 times your size. First impressions are important. Print some professional-looking business cards and pass them out, design a great logo for your company and put that logo on a sign where everyone can see it.

Smart business planning

Smart business planning

Develop a Web site, and see if you can get it linked to your community’s Chamber of Commerce or city Web site. Join social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to broaden your network of people who know who you are and what you do.

Get free help.
Organizations like the Small Business Administration and SCORE “Counselors to America’s Small Business” exist to provide assistance. They can give you help specifically tailored to your business. Also, retail organizations are creating tools for small business owners to find additional resources. For example, Office Depot has created “The Survival of the Smartest” Web site as part of its Small Business Self-Bailout Plan.

Included on the site at www.TheSurvivalOfTheSmartest.com, are weekly videos with smart tips, special product and service offers, small business resource tools, up-to-date news provided through feeds from small business Web sites and blogs, promotions specifically for businesses and expert advice on topics like how to connect your wireless network, how to save money while greening your office, information security and more.

Focus on your X Factor.
Recognize what you do and why you do it, and then research your competition. When you discover the factor that makes your business better and different from the competition, learn how to focus and multiply that “X Factor” to achieve success.

If you have a smart survival strategy that has helped your small business get through these tough times, you can enter the Office Depot Adopt a Small Business Contest. The company will recognize 500 small businesses nationwide for their smart survival strategies and award them each with more than $2,000 in Office Depot gift cards, tech support for a year and copy, print and shipping services. That’s $1 million in bailout money available. To enter, upload an original 2-minute video starting June 1 that explains the smart things your business is doing to survive these challenging times to TheSurvivalOfTheSmartest.com.

Self-hosted blog one year ago

Filed Under LiveJournal, Twitter, Web site, blog

I just noticed, while looking at some of my blog stats that I just Tweeted about, that my blog has been self-hosted for over a year now. It was a year back in April 2008. Remember I switched over from Livejournal. LiveJournal UserInfobizcards How did I do that you ask? A special plug-in: LJ user ex WordPress Plug-in. It converts <lj user=”username”> or <lj user=”community”> to look like it would if it was in LiveJournal. I still have my entries cross-posted to my old LiveJournal. All those entries are friends only there. This was made possible by LJ-XP (LiveJournal CrossPoster).

I am looking forward to another year or more of my blog being self-hosted.

There are still a lot of changes I have in stored for my blog in the upcoming months. As you have read in previous post, I have combined old sub-domains and such onto my blog. That is just the start! So please keep coming back and finding out what is new!

Main site combined with blog

My web site has now been combined with my blog. There are a few other things from my web site that I plan to add to my blog. But that will be little at a time. If you visit my old web site, it will now take you to my blog or a certain part of my blog, depending on the page you went to on my web site. As you may have read, I have been working on combining my sub-domains and such to my blog and now I have done that. Just my graphic design site hasn’t been moved. I don’t have any plans to move that one. This way I can keep everything in one place and help better maintain my web sites, I think it was easier to have it on my blog, easier to keep maintained.

Combined another sub-domain

Filed Under Web site, Where's George

I combined my sub-domain that was about Where’s George and posted it into my blog as a page. I only kept a few of the stuff, not everything. Just the basic, important parts. Check out the new page at: Currency Tracking as the new page is called.

Want more traffic to your blog!

Filed Under Business Cards, Tips, Twitter, Web site

Do you want to drive some traffic to your blog? I will give you some suggestions that I use to get some traffic to my blog.

SUBMIT TO SEARCH ENGINE FEEDS
I submit my rss feed to places like Ping Oat, Ping-O-Matic. At these Web sites you enter information about your blog. Then it will submit your blog to blog search engines and places that use rss to feed content into their Web sites. This also includes using your Ping Services to let them know when you make a new post. Don’t use the default method. Instead use a plug-in. It won’t ping too much, causing your site to be banned. I use MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer.

SUBMIT TO BLOG DIRECTORIES
I also submited my blog to LoadedWeb. It breaks down your blog by where you live. For example, My blog is under USA, Tennessee, Knoxville. This is just one example of many blog directories you can submit your blog to.

COMMENT IN OTHER BLOGS
Another way, you can build traffic is going to other people’s blogs and giving them comments. Be sure to list your blog or Web site. Most comments, will link your name to your blog or Web site. Also, allow comments on your blog. Be sure to reply to comments you receieve. Please make sure you don’t spam them with comments. Just give them comment based on what they wrote. Give them feedback. That is what comments are for after all.

Word of Mouth
Word of mouth, tell your friends and family about your blog. Basicly this is self-explanitory. Just tell everyone about your blog. After ahile, they will tell others about your blog and so forth.

SOCIAL BOOKMARKING
Add the social bookmarking sites, like Digg, Sphere, del.icio.us, and StumbledUpon. (to name a few). As an example, I have some down on the bottom of each of my post in my blog. This way people can favorite that post on their favorite site.

GET A TWITTER ACCOUNT
Twitter! Get a twitter account. I am sure if you search google you can find a plug-in that will tweet your Twitter account when you make a new post. That way those who wish to follow you on Twitter will know you have a new post. Twitter is one of the fastest growing communities on the Internet. I use TwitPress to post to my Twitter account of a new blog entry.

SOCIAL WEB SITES
Join social Web sites like Facebook and MySpace. Most a link to your blog on your profile. Some will even notify your friends on your profile that you have a new entry or two.

BUSINESS CARDS
If you have business cards, make sure to add your blog address to your business cards. So on your next printing order, make sure to make changes to them by adding this to it.

LINKS
Make sure to link to your blog in your signautre of your E-mail. Also, make sure you have a link on your main Web site to your blog. Maybe have your friends a link to your blog from theirs. You can even try link-exchanges. That is where people will trade links. Person A puts a link to you on their Web site, while you put a link to Person A on your Web site.

MAKE RELAVANT POST
Another idea is post about things that everyone wants to read, current news, celeberities, travel, tips and tricks, troubleshooting, how to’s, etc. Something unique always works as well. Make it something people will want to read. Something they may keep coming back for me. Make your post involve the readers. So they can post comments. Make sure you reply to those comments. It helps bring back readership to your blog.

TAG/CATEGORIES
Don’t forget to use tags. Tag your post based on the content of your post. Tags kind of work like keywords. Make sure the tags or categories (in come cases they use both) are keywords about the topic of the post. Don’t use keywords that don’t relate to the post you made. There is nothing like going to a blog entry based on a keyword and that entry has nothing to do with that keyword. That is a great way to lose readership.

RSS FEED
Make sure you have a RSS feed to your blog and make it where people know where to find it. A lot of readers read your blog via RSS feed readers. Try using FeedBurner. It lets you know how many subscribes you have reading your feed. I use Feedburner, it helps keep track of your feed stats!

STAT COUNTER
If your blog doesn’t have a stat counter, you might want to find a good plug-in to show you stats about your blog. They will show you the most popular entry. Best day for visits. Keywords used to come to your blog, your refer and any other number of information that might make it helpful to know where to promote your blog more or less in.

IMAGES
Add images to your post. Images help with visual effects. The old saying is … A Picture is worth a thousand words.. This is one practice that I need to do more when I post into my blog.

TRACKBACKS & TWEETBACKS
Basicly these work like links to other blogs or Twitter accounts that mentioned your blog entry. They usually show up as a comment on your blog. This way when people read their Twitter account or blog they will see your blog and possibly visit your blog from that Trackback or Tweetback.

NOFOLLOW
rel tag with nofollow (example: rel=”nofollow”) in your link tag will help boost your ranking, thus leading to more visitors! I use a plug-in for my blog for it. It automatically adds the nofollow attribute to links. Nofollow Reciprocity plug-in

SITE MAPS
Have a site map that google and yahoo can use to index your blog. I use this plug-in to generate sitemaps for me. Google (XML) Sitemaps Generator for WordPress.

PATIENTS
Just remember it takes time and patients for your blog to get popularity and start gaining hits. It won’t happen over night! Patients is a virtue..

OTHER IDEAS?
Do you have any other ideas that are helpful? Anything I need to update or change, add to or take away? Just let me know. I need your feedback. What helped you? What didn’t help you?

Combined a subdomian – Box Tops

Filed Under Box Tops, Family, School, Web site

I combined one of my subdomains into my blog. It was only had one page on it.
I combined my Box Tops subdomain. I put it all on a page on my blog. You can check it out at: http://blog.cardeologist.com/box-tops-for-education/.

This school year (2008-09), 5th grade year with your help we gave 694 General Mills Box Tops, 1 Fav-O-Rich Milk Cap, 4 Tyson A+ labels, 40 Campbell’s labels and 5 ink cartridges.

Please continue to send the Box Tops. The middle school my daughter will start saves and uses them too. Thanks very much!

Over the new few months or so, I plan to make some changes with some of my subdomains, just like I did with My Box Tops site. I will try to combine (mix in with my blog site). All my old subdomains that no longer work, will auto redirect to my blog. Thus, making pretty much everything on one area. Perhaps even saving file space and such.
